The Deceptive Snare: Understanding the Love of Money and Our True Inheritance

In 1 Timothy 6:10, Paul delivers a timeless warning that continues to echo through the ages:

“For the love of money is the root of all evil: which while some coveted after, they have erred from the faith, and pierced themselves through with many sorrows.” (KJV)

This verse has often been misunderstood, sometimes even misquoted as “money is the root of all evil.” But the scripture is clear: it is not money itself, but the love of money, that becomes the root of all evil.

Money: A Neutral Tool with Powerful Influence

Money, by its nature, is neutral. It is simply a tool, a means of exchange, a resource that can be used for good or ill. The problem arises when money takes a position in our hearts that it was never meant to occupy. When we allow money to become the center of our desires, it subtly—and sometimes not so subtly—begins to control our decisions, our relationships, and even our values.

Whatever we love, we exalt. Whatever we love, we honor, cherish, and sometimes even begin to worship. This is the danger that Paul warns of. When money becomes an object of our affection and ambition, it becomes an idol. And as with all idols, it demands a sacrifice—often at the expense of our peace, integrity, and relationship with God.

Compromise: The Cost of Covetousness

Many have compromised their goodness, their faith, and their integrity in pursuit of wealth. The lure of riches can be so overpowering that it blinds us to what is truly valuable. In chasing after material gain, people have made devastating choices—choices that leave scars not just on their own lives but on the lives of others as well.

It is easy to lose sight of an essential truth: money is not our eternal inheritance. No matter how much we accumulate, money remains a temporary and fragile possession. It can be gained and lost, valued and devalued, stolen or squandered. But what God has promised us is unshakable and eternal.

Our True Inheritance: Rooted in God

Long before gold was mined from the earth, before the first coins were minted, before financial systems ever existed, God had already provided everything we would ever need—in Him. Our true inheritance is not found in bank accounts or investments. It is found in God Himself: His presence, His promises, His provision.

This divine inheritance includes salvation, peace that surpasses all understanding, divine favor, wisdom for every season, and the promise of eternal life. These are riches that no amount of money can buy. Money might afford us temporary comfort, but it cannot secure what truly matters: our righteousness in Christ, our calling, and the fulfillment of our God-ordained destiny.

Freedom Through Trust

When we set our hearts on money, we exchange peace for anxiety and contentment for restlessness. But when we place our trust in God, acknowledging Him as our true source, we walk in freedom. We are no longer enslaved by the pursuit of wealth or the fear of lack. Instead, we rest in the assurance that God—our Provider—will meet all our needs according to His riches in glory (Philippians 4:19).

This is not a call to reject financial stewardship or to disdain material provision. Rather, it is a call to keep money in its proper place—as a servant, not a master. We are to steward wealth wisely, but never allow it to rule our hearts.

Eternal Perspective

Jesus Himself warned in Matthew 6:19-24 that we cannot serve both God and mammon (money). He urged us to store up treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor rust can destroy, and where thieves do not break in and steal. Our focus must remain on the eternal, not the fleeting.

Colossians 3:24 reminds us that “the Lord Christ…[is] your reward of the inheritance.” This inheritance is secure, unchanging, and far more valuable than any earthly treasure.

The Prayer of Alignment

Let us pray with hearts set on God’s eternal promises:

“Heavenly Father, thank You for being my true inheritance. Help me to never exalt money above You or allow it to control my heart. I trust in Your provision and walk in the riches of Your grace. My life is a testimony of faithfulness, integrity, and complete reliance on You. In Jesus’ name, Amen.”

A Golden Nugget to Remember

Money is not your eternal inheritance. Your true inheritance is with God. This inheritance is eternal, unshakable, and given to us long before money ever existed. Before gold was mined, before coins were minted, and before financial systems were built, God had already provided everything we would ever need in Him.

As we journey through life, let us remember that while money may serve a purpose, it can never fulfill the deepest needs of our souls. Our hope, security, and inheritance are firmly rooted in God alone—a foundation that will never be shaken.
